I've been told, I don't remember by whom, that benzodiazepines are extremely addictive, and I'm starting to wonder whether I am addicted to my anti-anxiety medication, Klonopin (clonazepam). I used to take .5mg at a time.....now I take 3-4mg at a time......I was told that this was one of the least addictive benzos, but I am taking it a lot now, and I think my dr. may be concerned that I am getting addicted as well. Has anyone had any experience with addiction particularly to clonazepam? I was wondering if this was even a possibility, because I'm really not educated well in this area......
I see my dr. today also, so she might say something then.

Re: Addiction
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 11:01 AMHi, Familiar Face!
I have kind of the reverse story. I was on Alprazolam, which is Xanax, and became dependent on that, so my doc switched me to clonazipam. I don't know much about dependency rates with it, but, like yours, my doc told me that it was the least addictive option. I take 1mg, 3 x daily. I don't think I've known of anyone being on the doages you mentioned. Are those the prescribed doses, or are you taking extra, hoping it will help?
I think, generally, when a drug isn't doing its job well enough at reasonably high doses, the best thing is to augment it with something else. But, you are already on a lot of meds, aren't you?
So, I guess I'm no help. I don't find the clonazipam nearly as effective as the alprazolam, but, oh well. -

Re: Addiction
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 11:25 AMGuess what - there's no real difference between Clonazepam and Alprozolam ...
They're just 2 brands basically and different shaped and colored pills ...
I have to point this out anytime I start hearing someone talking about how one is way better than the other ...

Re: Addiction
Thu, August 23, 2007 - 4:00 PMI'm not sure why you think you "have to" pointed it out. I know that they are the same type of drug. But, you can't say that all SSRIs are the same, even if they are basically the same type of drug.
I can assure you that I feel a difference between them when I have one or the other in my system. (Sometimes if I run out of the clonazipam before I pick up my next prescription, I go back to taking the alprazolam I still have from when my doctor switched me.) I am not the placebo effect type, and I am particularly sensitive to what is going on in my body. So, whether or not, in your opinion, they should be exactly the same, I can assure you that, for me, they're not.
